André Rieu Wins The Mexican Grammy

André Rieu Wins The Mexican Grammy
Mexico loves André Rieu. That is why Mexico presented him the prestigious Lunas del Auditorio award, the equivalent of the American Grammy Award. The prize is awarded to the artist who presents the best live performance of the year. This year the choice therefore befell on André Rieu and his orchestra.
André could not accept the award himself, since he will be performing in the Ziggo Dome tomorrow, which requires the necessary preparations. André Rieu is so popular in Mexico that he will probably receive a tile on the walk of fame. (Thanks to John for the Translation)

"Home For Christmas"

Pierre Rieu & Sinterklaas

Pierre & Sinterklaas
The wind was blowing old fashioned like through the trees on Sunday. Children and parents were all present on the boat.  That did not matter in the Spain-Valley. It only increased the Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) atmosphere on the boat moored at the Kesselskade. Maastricht children now know that the boat will be there until Sinterklaas’ birthday, and it regularly and often is the place to be. Especially when well known citizens of Maastricht come and read exciting, sweet or cute Sinterklaas stories. This Sunday, the well known – and with a variety of story books on his lap - Pierre Rieu is sitting next to Sinterklaas.
Yes, the son of the world famous André Rieu who simultaneously is his left and right hand at concerts, recordings and television tapings, found it nice to come and read to the youngest Maastricht children for an hour or so. And he does that fantastically. Sinterklaas thinks so but especially so think the children. His choice is greeted with applause: he reads Sinterklaas Stories for them from Liselotje’s Big Story Book. You make friends easy this way Pierre notices rather quickly. Especially when you are a good reader.
Next Sunday there will also be a morning reading. MVV coach René Trost will then make his appearance. He can find the road to the Spain-Valley just as easy as his players find the goal of their opponents. At the last birthday celebration the successful Kerkrade coach was also at the party.
This year, Sinterklaas too has a special gift wish. Children and parents who come to the Spain-Valley should not forget to bring children's books from home that have already been read and will not be read anymore. Sinterklaas collects all these books and places them in his bookcase. His helpers (Zwarte Pieten) ensure later that these books find their way to children from Maastricht and the surroundings, who unfortunately do not have many books available to them. So if you have exciting, fun and beautiful children's books available, do not forget to bring them to the Sinterklaas Boat. The Spain Valley boat is moored on the Kesselskade where the boats of the Stiphout Rederij are also moored. Sinterklaas is only too happy if you will do this!!! (Our thanks to John for his Translation!)

André Rieu Must Be Missing His Blond Angel

André Rieu Must Be Missing His Blond Angel
For about six years, Mirusia was like a daughter to André Rieu and his wife Marjorie. The violinist brought the then twenty year old over from her Australian country of birth, and he was immediately so impressed by the golden voice of this nightingale that tears sprang into his eyes and he never wanted to let her go. Yet she is now back on the other side of the world, where she is working hard on her solo career. Not only must the violinist go on without her, her love life has also come to an end!
Privé November, 2012: Mirusia Louwerse made her own decision! Homesickness drove the twenty-seven year old back to Australia, where she now cherishes being with her family. For year she has been missing her parents tremendously, and this hung over her like a dark cloud of her otherwise very successful career in the Netherlands. Her fairytale started when one of her aunts living in the Netherlands forwarded a letter to André Rieu drawing his attention to her talented niece. The violin virtuoso immediately called Mirusia and invited her to come to the Netherlands. The blond beauty immediately boarded an airplane in Australia, came and remained with André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra. He afforded her the change to create furor as a soloist of his huge orchestra, with which she raveled the entire world. Time and time again she brought tears to the violinist’s eyes and she knew how to touch him. Mirusia actually wanted more than to stand next to André. She wanted to go solo! André assisted her in that and the first result was "Always and Forever", a beautiful CD with fourteen songs which she had sung over the years during the concerts. And-typical of André-the violinist was totally involved in the entire project. He made the Johann Strauss Orchestra available, arranged for a choir, was present during the recordings, encouraged her and even mixed everything. But through this successful CD – which sold very well and I received many positive reactions – Mirusia’s urge to go solo became even stronger. With tears in her eyes she said good-bye to André, who reluctantly let his "daughter" go. "Here in Australia I am now busy with my solo tour" Mirusia said in an exclusive interview with Privé. I hope someday to be working with André again. He told me I always welcome to come back. But currently I am super busy with my solo activities. The last performance I did with André was just before he became ill again. It was a horrible time and we all were very worried. I am very happy that he is totally recovered. Just before he started his Brazilian concerts I returned home. Two Brazilian sopranos replaced me there.
Was it a difficult decision to leave the Netherlands? "It was difficult since I have family in the Netherlands and had built a circle of friends. I did not like leaving them behind. I experienced the same in 2007 when I had to leave everyone and everything in Australia in order to go to the Netherlands. I had such a longing to go back to my roots and found that to be an opportune time. I did think about that for a long time. I was very doubtful for a long time as to when I should take this step. But since there were so many requests for me as a solo singer, that for me it appeared to be the right decision. André and his son Pierre also supported me in this decision."
And how does it feel to be back in the country of your birth?"It is a weird feeling as if I had never left; it all seems like a huge dream! My parents love having their daughter back. And I am so happy to be back with them. I am their only child, so they missed me extra much these last few years. Everything is fine with them, but of course I never know how much longer I’ll be able to keep them. They are all that I have, and that is why we enjoy every day. I can now cook for them and invite them over. That is super special for me since I have never been able to do that before. I now have my own house with a large garden and a new car. Of course my parents also attend my concerts, and they are so proud. And we look forward to finally be able to celebrate Christmas together again. And moreover it is wonderful to see my friends and other family members again whom I have been missing for so long."
In an earlier interview last year, Mirusia told about her love, Sebastiaan: Sebastiaan would come to Australia as much as possible. He has been back to Australia with me eight times. Although here we do not see each other frequently either: he lives in Amsterdam and I in Maastricht. Of course due to my work I am very often gone. But he is too. Due to his job as a freelance sound technician he is gone from home a lot. Sometimes he travels with us on tour, since he also works for André. That is how we met three and a half years ago. I saw him for the first time when we were recording for our DVD in the Efteling. He was working there then. First I only saw him from behind, but liked him instantly. I thought: "Such nice blond hair." When he turned around I also noticed that he had a very nice face. And apparently he instantly found me nice too! I blushed, said "hi" and walked away giggling! I felt like I was fifteen again. Everything is going well between us, and I am not worried that, when I return to Australia, he’ll be looking for another girlfriend. He understands my homesickness, and since he lives in the same world as I, he understands that music is my passion, and I am gone three-fourth of the year and have to rehearse a lot."
How is everything between you now?Eventually we together decided to put an end our relationship and for each of us to follow our own career. We never had a fight in all those years. It was a wonderful time in our lives. Nothing went really wrong between us, he is a very friendly and nice man, but we were both going in different directions and the living distance between us made  that more difficult. Sometimes in life, people grow apart, and that happened between Sebastiaan and I too. I was planning to return to Australia and afterwards again tour with André. He wanted to stay in the Netherlands in the movie business. He is involved with "The voice of Holland." I will always remember him fondly and there are still times when I would like to share things with him. I think everyone goes through that after a relationship break up, whether it is romantic or just plain friendship, you will always miss that person. I will never forget him. But I have gone on with my life and "I moved on."
Do you miss your colleagues?"Of course I miss them, but they write me often and thanks to Face Book I stay in contact with many of them. Some of them are even planning to come and visit me here. I really look forward to that. Sometimes I am homesick for the Netherlands. I miss the cozy cafés, the European fashion and my friends. The longer I stay gone, the stronger that feeling becomes."
What all do you do in Australia?
"I am busy with an Australian solo tour, which is going very well. I started in my hometown, Redlands which sold out immediately! I was so happy with the enthusiastic reaction I received from the public, it felt like a welcome home party. On 29 November I will close my tour in the Sydney Opera House, which I find to be awesome. I have my own "Salon Orchestra" for the tour and several very special guests who all travel with me. I had a few days off in October which I spent with my family and friends. For this tour especially I released an album "Home" which is also available for the Dutch audiences: you can download or order this CD via www.mirusia.net This CD was recorded in my own province of Queensland and all the songs reflect to the fact that I am really home again."

What are your future plans?
"After this tour I will start working on a new CD and DVD. Very exciting!"

Do they know you there too?"You will have to ask the public that, but here I had two number one albums and my concerts sell well, so……As a matter of fact, in August I received a very prestigious award: the ARIA Chart award for my DVD "André Rieu Presents: Always and Forever" This award is presented to the artist who reached the number one position in the ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) Charts. My DVD was in the number one position four weeks in a row and I was the only classical artist who received such an award. That was very exceptional and I feel very honored."
When will you return to the Netherlands?
"I would very much like to tour through the Netherlands next year and am currently in the process to arrange that. I had such a wonderful time In Maastricht, that city has stolen my heart. All the cafés and restaurants – I have been told there are more than 300 of them – something you do not find here. I really miss that burgundian atmosphere."

And do you miss André too?
"Of course! I have so much to thank him for. From the very beginning I felt very much at ease with André and Marjorie, just as if we had known each other for a long time. I immediately felt like family, as if they were my uncle and aunt. The way you see André on stage or on TV that is the way he is in his daily life: a very normal, nice and funny man. He is the "Godfather" of his orchestra. He is quite driven and strives for the best. I am like that too, and that is why we understand each other so well. If it is up to me, I will be touring with him again in the future. But first I must now fend for myself."

André Rieu's Angel Still Calls Australia Home

André Rieu's Angel Still Calls Australia Home
Mirusia said her choice to come home, was not only about her need to perform on home soil, but to enjoy the Australian spirit and great weather."I missed Australia so much," she said. "The weather in the Netherlands is very depressing at times and nothing like the weather of Australia." The singer-songwriter will return to the Netherlands next year to start touring with Andre again.
Rieu gave Mirusia his blessings to pursue her dream of touring solo in her home country. "I feel very proud to have been the person who gave Mirusia the possibility to start her career," he said. "After working for five years with this incredibly talented soprano I can only wish her all the luck she deserves in her solo career." Click HERE To Read Full Article

André Rieu's Chapeau Column for November 2012

André Rieu
My Routine Is Well Established
Chapeau Column, November 2012: My new lifestyle suits me just fine. A minimum of ceremonies; no receptions or openings of events. Only making music, performing and working out, almost every day. You get used to it. It is now, of course, a part of my life. And still under the guidance of my wonderful trainer. This of course is very nice, because that keeps me quite motivated. And the rewards are great: for months now I have been feeling great and am in great shape, which is necessary in order to continue to do those concert tours.
That also includes a good healthy diet, which does not only apply to me privately, but also to my entire orchestra and crew when we are on tour. Not that previously we ate badly, definitely not. At a very early stage we brought our own cooks along. And now it is becoming more and more organic. If you approach that a bit more seriously, you become more conscious about it all. In the past with all what was going on, I did not pay much attention to that. It is still quite busy, but that has become a real priority to us, so that we all stay healthy and fit. Once you opt for a healthier choice, then, according to me, you will continue with that. The natural products taste better, which in itself is a benefit.
Quite a relief now since through my illness of earlier this year, all the postponed concerts have now been made up in October and that was the last series we did in that regard, which was in Germany, Switzerland and France. You now have the feeling that everything has straightened itself out. Now we are planning hard for 2013 and 2014. Around the world, the interest is still growing strong, which gives you a great feeling. We are preparing a new tour for Brazil in 2013 and are also looking at other countries in South-America. We will again go to the USA and Canada, and Australia and New Zealand are also on the program. China is becoming more and more serious. Our people have already been there searching for suitable locations. Of course with all this we are not going to forget Maastricht. *Since recently the second weekend ticket sales are now in effect for the traditional Vrijthof concerts. Those of you who live in this country and cannot wait that long, you can at end of the month, visit us at the Ahoy in Rotterdam.
At this time we are very much looking forward to the Christmas tour in England, Scotland and Ireland. The venues are all as good as sold out, so that looks promising. The public there is blazingly enthusiastic, and the funny thing is, they themselves were astonished by this. They find themselves quite a stiff people - maybe others at times find that too, ha-ha - but with Viennese waltzes they are just as passionate as the rest of the world. Fantastic is that, my orchestra and I  enjoy that immensly when we are able to experience that.
I felt extremely honored that recently in the Royal Albert Hall in London I received the Classical Brit Award for the best album of the year. That is something to be proud of, although I find all the hustle and bustle associated with the event not really that enjoyable. But this time it was just fine, since I was surprised by the presence of a very special table companion Sir Anthony Hopkins, who together with me also walked on the red carpet. His waltz "And the Waltz goes on," is in fact on the CD for which I received the award. We stay in contact via email; he is a wonderful person, so it was great to see him again.
The British are so excited about our music that on 24 November in cinemas all across the nation our Christmas special will be shown, which was recorded late last year in Maastricht. Therefore, and with pleasure, I am again advertising for my city, which I normally do all over the world. This way I am also contributing my part in our candidacy for Cultural Capital. The DVD and CD of our Christmas special are now available in the Netherlands, so we again are in an early Christmas spirit. It was a massive task last year, but now we can very satisfactorily reflect back on that since we were able to produce something very nice in our own city.
Christmas for our family remains a fantastic family event together with our children and grandchildren. Something you can only celebrate at home. I enjoy it immensely. New year’s eve in contrast is always a bit subdued, for the simple reason that on New Year's Day in the afternoon we are already on the stage in the Cologne Arena, which has been a tradition for many years. This time, due to the silver jubilee of the arena itself, the entire Maastrichter Staar will also be there for an extra festive start of the New Year. I wish you all a Happy Christmas Holiday and in the meantime, a very good beginning in the New Year. See you in 2013!!
André Rieu
*John’s note. Reference the second weekend ticket sales for the Vrijthof concerts in Maastricht for 2013. We are not aware nor have we seen any official publication to this effect. Remember last year when André in this column stated that the concerts would be first weekend in July of 2012 ......... Thank you to Ineke for sending this and John Translating it.

How We Met: André Rieu & Sir Anthony Hopkins
'I didn't know it, but my wife had sent him my score'
André has all the most unfashionable characteristics: you mention charisma or glamour these days and people's lips curl up cynically, but I like his boundless enthusiasm. He's a showman – he drives 100mph down side-streets, and at his house he has a castle tower in the garden.

André Rieu Family Visit in Marseille

Family Visit in Marseille
Limburger, Nov. 2, 2012 by Mirthe Smeets: Last week André Rieu and his orchestra performed in Marseille. That is no coincidence, because André's brother Robert lives in Marseille. In early days André Rieu's parents owned a country house in France, where André and his brother Robert assisted the construction work. They fell in love with the country and the food and they studied the language. André: "We also learned a lot from the French comic TinTin. I can still tell you how to say in French, Thousand bombs and grenades".
Robert Rieu said good bye to Maastricht and decided to stay in the country of his ancestors. (Rieu is originally a French name, but they don't know of them any more). André remained in Maastricht. "People often ask me why I don't live abroad, but I love the quietness of Maastricht. I like to stay in my own city. Coming back from a tour I love to see everything familiar and nice and I'll never leave Maastricht. I am often abroad for my work and I love the variety. Every city has its own charms". The musician still loves France. "The people are good music connoisseurs and they appreciate the concerts enormously".
Pierre André Robert
When André is in France, he'll also go to Marseille, where Robert lives. "Of course we'll never skip this city in our French tours. Then I can have a nice chat with my brother and his family and eat a good bouillabaisse, (which is the specialty of the city.) I miss my brother, although we often call or mail.
Last April the yearly reunion in the harbor city of Marseille was cancelled (like 20 other concerts) because of André's health problems. In a talk show on Dutch TV with Pauw and Witteman, André had said that he was overworked, and exhausted, which effected his balancing problems again. Two years ago he had suffered from an infection in his inner ear and the same problem started again. Then he had to realize that he was a human being of flesh and blood, who could not go on like this forever. "That was a shock, but I learned from that. Earlier I did not take time to work out and that's nonsense. Now I make time, and I eat healthy food". Pierre adds, "My father does not give any live interviews any more prior to a concert. Our team observes him. We prevent him to do unnecessary things like receptions, premieres and VIP performances".
André, "I need to be more quiet, I now know that I have to listen to my body and not doing too much".
Pierre, "Everyone has his own signals. My father has to take care of his equilibrium. As soon as he feels a little light in the head, we'll immediately pull the brake".
The concert schedule does not show as very quiet! Dozens of performances per month! "That's what my father loves most, being on stage", says Pierre. "Entertain people with music. I think he'll go on till he drops dead. To stop is no option. We just finished the planning for next year". We bet the tickets are sold already.
The fans in Marseille are cheering. In the hall are also admirers from other countries. Rieu stays down to earth. "I always said that millions of people love this music, that will always remain the same". He adds, "When I am back in Maastricht in awhile, I will have to charge myself for the next tours of this year through the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Belgium. In the meantime we are creating new plans". The orchestra is and will remain an addicting and dangerous passion for Rieu.
André and Robert
He feels good in Marseille. He is joking, teasing the audience and winking once in a while to his brother Robert who is in the hall. Although the French people would like to keep him (and he fully fits in the country with his two French names) he'll leave to the northern direction with the French TinTin under his arm and in his suitcase some Bouillabaisse for Marjorie, up to Maastricht, the city with also a lot of French influences: the city of d'Artagnan!

André Rieu's Listed House of Birth Wrong

André Rieu's Wrong House of Birth

Limburger Nov. 2, 2012, by Rob Cobben: Wrong information has been given in the Maastricht Musical Route of the Tourist Office. Not Begijnenstraat 1, as the Tourist Office thought for years, but Plenkershoven 11 is the real birthplace of violinist André Rieu. This is confirmed by his younger brother Jean-Philippe.
Tourists and André Rieu fans, who like to see the birth house of the famous Maastricht violinist, have been sent to the wrong property address for years! On The Maastricht Musical Route of the Tourist Office's website, the house Begijnenstraat 1 is marked as the place where André Rieu was born on October 1, 1949.
It is true that the violinist/conductor for a long time lived in the white building along the Jeker River, near Poort Waerachtig (old city Gate), but he was born in the quarter Jekerdal, at the address Plenkershoven 11. André Rieu himself was not available for comment, but his younger brother Jean-Philippe confirms that the information on the tourist website is not correct. "My two eldest sisters were born in Amsterdam. The youngest four of the six of us were born in Maastricht, on Plenkershoven. But we actually considered Begijnenstraat as our birthplace, because we lived there such a long time".
André's younger brother remembers that the family moved from Plenkershoven to Begijnenstraat. "I was four years old. On a summer day at 12 pm, the teacher of the Kindergarten drove me on a Vespa home to the Begijnenstraat. There a festive lunch was waiting for me and my brothers and sisters. From that day on we lived there. That's almost 52 years ago. It was the first and also the last time I was allowed on a Vespa. That's why I can remember it.
Janne Baetsen, from the Maastricht Tourist Office says they were not aware of the error on the map of the route. "We never received complaints. The route on the website was created by our management. It is probably an interpretation error, but we will update the information."
According to Baetsen the Maastricht Musical Route has been on the website of the organization for over two years. Whether the real birthplace of Rieu, the Plenkershoven, will be added on the map Baetsen could not say. "But at any rate we are going to change the text of the property Begijnenstraat 1 from "André Rieu's birthplace" to "House where Andre Rieu was raised".

Can't help playing with HIS pics. LOVE that blue jacket on him (maybe he heard a lot about his red one??) , could go front cover on fashion magazines. But to satisfy certain loyal Andre-wardrobe fans, there's THE red one as well. No Copyright Infringement Intended. Just for fun, Alice :) (The two photos of André were taken this week in the UK)
