André Rieu Christmas DVD To Be Released in November

ANDRÉ RIEU CHRISTMAS DVD TO BE RELEASED IN NOVEMBER

The City Cave is one of the locations where André Rieu will make his recordings for his new Christmas DVD. It will take place in September and the DVD will be released in November.
Rieu is not an unknown in the City Cave. The reactions after his concert for Queen Beatrix in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the VVV (Tourist Information Offices) were overwhelming. That's the reason Rieu's selected the City Cave for his background. The recordings will not be open to the public.

Pierre Rieu Markets His Father André Rieu

Pierre Rieu Markets His Father

CHAPEAU MAGAZINE: You haven’t had the idea yet, due to your role in your company, to do a specific study say in, economics, or to work abroad for a year with a different orchestra or artist, purely for the experience?
PIERRE: No, because what you learn there you can not apply to ARP (André Rieu Productions); you would still have to throw that experience away. My Mom sometimes pulls her hair out: "What has he come with now?" We do not work with a budget either. Our financial advisor, Roel van Veghel, has tried to institute that numerous times, but to no avail. Even the Schönbrunn idea, that just popped into Dads head and then he says: "I think we should do that". Of course we do look at our finances, but we still go ahead with the plan. In the end it turned out that it costs us three times as much as we thought. It sure had its setbacks, but it did wonders for us.
The tour through Australia cost us 28 million Euros, and if we had spent that amount of money on marketing via spots, billboards, advertising and the like, we would never have had the same results. The marketing we received from that tour has been invaluable and went all over the world. It goes without saying, at least, that "some fool" copied this huge castle, and was even able to attract many, many visitors with it. Everyone in Maastricht Benefits From André Rieu Concerts

Everyone from Maastricht Benefits
Businesses very satisfied with the summer events on the Vrijthof

CHAPEAU MAGAZINE: For Toine Scheerens, president of the collaborative Sahot Hotels in Maastricht and director of the NH Hotel, the concerts of André Rieu on the Vrijthof can no longer be ignored. "They are a huge boost for the hotels during the month of July, which normally is viewed as a weak month and now because of the concerts has become a very good month.
It is six times 10,000 visitors who travel to Maastricht, and that during a period when many people are on holiday. It's not only just all about the rooms, since many of the guests book an all inclusive package with dinner and transportation to and from the Vrijthof. We also have six additional buses running daily, in addition to extra taxi-cabs. Every one profits, the baker and the butcher but also those businesses that stay busy with the laundering of sheets and towels. All the hotels in the region are busy. We even have to hire additional laundry services from outside the local area". "The hotels also take a little advantage of the situation," says Scheerens. "On the departure days of our guests, we sell on an average of about sixty vlaais which they take with them as a memento of Limburg. The lobbies of the hotels have been decorated with attributes of André Rieu and the music being played during those days is from his CD’s. These people are huge fans from all over the world who like to come to Maastricht to hear and see him play in his home town and place of his birth."
RIEU AND TEFAF
"The impact is at least as large as that of the TEFAF" (Maastricht’s largest art exhibition) says hotel owner Benoit Wesley (hotel Derlon and Apple Park). "Not only for the hotels and restaurants, but also for the many stores. Many of the guests stick around the day after the concert and visit the many stores, shops, terraces, etc. The TEFAF is fine for us, but the exhibition itself is conducted in the MECC, (Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Center) at the edge of the city. André Rieu’s concerts are in the center of the city, so that is much more people on their terrace every evening. They are being spoiled by the catering company Delicieux who offers them a complete gastronomical menu.
Maurice Knols, director of the VVV (Tourist Information Office) also emphasizes on the role as ambassador which André so feverishly portrays for his city. "That has an enormous impact. And above all, visitors from all over the world learn to know the city in an exceptional noticeable. There is an atmosphere of fraternization in the city, very exceptional. Previously July was the worst month of the year, but now along with March, the best. Wesley has an explanation for the lesser number of concerts, six this year, compared to eight last year. André wants to maintain a balance and independently from that, tickets became obviously more expensive due to the increase in the VAT, from six to nineteen percent. That also affects the music lovers.
"RIEUKE"
For hotel owner Camille Oostwegel (Chateau St.Gerlach, Kruisheren Hotel, Chateau Neerkanne and Winselerhof) it is not just about many hotel guests. "Of course hotel occupancy is extremely good. But that also has an indirect effect. Due to TV images being beamed across the entire world, this is huge advertising for Maastricht. We still do not realize completely how much value André Rieu is for Maastricht and Limburg. Everywhere he performs he speaks about his city, Maastricht. When I go to France, everyone knows Maastricht. Not only because of the Treaty of Maastricht, but also because of André Rieu." Camille Oostwegel is also proud of a deal he, as president of the Museum on the Vrijthof, which is currently being renovated and expanded, and André Rieu have made. We have created a special beer glass from the "Brand" brewery with André Rieu’s image on it. The intention is to sell ten thousand of them. The profits will go towards the museum. It is a fantastic gesture of him for his city. The glasses should be ready just prior to the concerts. André will be the first recipient of a "Rieuke", since that’s what we’ve named the glass. Who knows, maybe this might give the "Brand" brewery the idea to brew a special "Rieuke". Guaranteed success if you ask me".

The cafes and restaurants on the Vrijthof are doing an exceptional business during the concerts, since their terraces are enlarged and sold out for the entire evening. Many of the cafes will use caterers. The Theatre on the Vrijthof does that too since they serve 180 manner. The Vrijthof is beautifully lit and the atmosphere is fantastic. This is what every city would like to have as a profile. I am sure that because of these concerts, Maastricht has gained many fans who would like to return. A city in terms of tourism should include good culture, all the way from top to bottom. If you do have such a world event in your home, you sure can be happy".

Frank Steijns Musical Partner of André Rieu

Maastricht citizen, Frank Steijns (40), as a musician wears many hats. The best known is that as first violinist in the Johann Strauss orchestra of André Rieu. In addition to that he also is the city carillon player for the city of Maastricht. Even in an official capacity, thus as a civil servant. But more and more he is also becoming a musical sparring partner with André Rieu. Together they make their own compositions and arrangements.
Frank Steijns
The musical sparring partner of André Rieu

CHAPEAU MAGAZINE: In the last ten years Frank Steijns has not had a real vacation. Due to his double functions as Orchestra member with André Rieu and city carillon player there is no real opportunity to take off for a few weeks. "But that does not matter, because with the entire orchestra we travel all over the world. In reality that is not a vacation, but you do get to see a lot and the atmosphere in the group is fantastic. So really I do not have the urge to step into an airplane. Especially on Saturdays I seem to be doing this, so I can play the city carillon. When we are on tour somewhere in Europe, I travel back and forth quickly. And if that combination does not work out, I ensure for a replacement in Maastricht so that the people still can enjoy the beautiful sounds of the bells".

Next to violin and carillon Frank also studied Orchestra Conducting. Those different sides of music he learned while at the conservatory in Leuven (Louvain). "As a primary I studied music theory, which helps me a lot now since together with André I write more and more music. In New Zealand we together wrote our own beautiful waltz which will be on our next CD. That is really nice. André has such a wonderful feeling for music. He knows exactly where he wants to go. I feel the same way, I know where to place the proper arrangements. And so we derive a pleasing piece of music. Last year when André was required to take it easy for a few months; we popped into the studio for an hour or so, so the two of us could make music together, more or less for relaxation. It suited us, and we have composed quite a number of music pieces."

Frank Steijns has been doing arrangements for André Rieu for a while now. Also for the by Anthony Hopkins written waltz, which the orchestra recently recorded. "In that aspect, I am the link between André Rieu and the orchestra, and that works wonderfully. It’s primarily all about what you both feel and the atmosphere. Since you can always play the same notes in quite a few different ways, e.g. warmth and feeling, you have to be on the same page." In between all that, Frank Steijns still manages to play his mobile carillon and also carillons in other cities. "My hands are totally immerged in music. And I did not want to do anything else. The morning after my final exam party in Leuven (Louvain), André called me at 7:30 in the morning and wanted to know if I could substitute in his orchestra. Could I come and play that evening. That was in 1994. I have been playing with him ever since."

Marc Rieu Exhibits During Maastricht Concerts

Marc Rieu Exhibits During the Maastricht Concerts

CHAPEAU MAGAZINE: In the wake of his father, the "other" son of André Rieu, Marc, tries for the second consecutive year in a row to take the Vrijthof by storm. Not in as much as taking the square itself, but rather the Theatre in which he exhibits all his paintings. "It became a success last year", says Marc Rieu who is a fan of his father, but sees no role for himself in the company. "I am the illusionist in the family, at least in my paintings. Suggestive illusionism is what you can call my style. Last year I sold eleven pieces during the exhibition and received four job orders. Afterwards I worked quite hard in order to have sufficient new canvases for a new exhibition".
Last year Marc Rieu's works could be seen amongst others in the "Art in the Park" exhibition and during "Jumping Indoor Maastricht" and "Art Nocturne" in Knokke, Belgium. "And next year I will try to exhibit in a gallery in Maastricht during the TEFAF". (The world’s most influential art fair)

Unique Photo Book of André Rieu by Govert de Roos

Unique Photo Book of André Rieu by Govert de Roos
CHAPEAU MAGAZINE: The well known Amsterdam photographer Govert de Roos has followed André Rieu for months on end in order to create a special photo book. The results can now be found in a book called "André Rieu, the Man behind the Phenomenon". During the Vrijthof concerts, the public has been afforded the first opportunity to purchase this book.
In Chapeau we offer you an exclusive small preview, a small selection of the numerous photos de Roos has shot of André, from Maastricht to Mexico, from Amsterdam to America.
"For forty years now I have been photographing well known artists from at home and abroad" says Govert de Roos. There is always pressure because you always have a specific time frame to capture the right images. It was a dream of mine to follow a well known artist for an extended period of time. So I approached the Netherlands’ most successful artist. And André was immediately enthusiastic about it. He let me enter his life. I earned his trust to be able to capture him in so many different moments. I started with the artist Rieu and learned to know the person as André. A perfectionist, but also a family man and so very modest ...

André Rieu Maastricht 2011 Video Reports

André Rieu in Maastricht 2011 Video Reports

The day before the first concert there is the traditional Dress rehearsal. In maastricht there is typically a different program from all his other concerts. Furthermore this years concert will be taped again and broadcast in many cinemas by CinemaLive.
During this Dress rehearsal you see the interaction between him and the recording crew and arranging the final details for the concert. During this dress rehearsal it rained as can been seen by the umbrellas and the sound of the rain on my camera. Friday, the day of the first concert was a fabulous day, sunshine and a very nice temperature. The second concert on Saturday was held in the rain. 10.000 ponchos on the Vrijthof ... Ruud
