The Rieu Collection in Groesbeek

‘The Rieu Collection: Glory To The Liberation Message’

The Rieu Collection May 27, 2011
From May 27- Oct 1st, the National Liberation Museum 1944-1945 in Groesbeek will exhibit a selection of military vehicles associated with the liberation period from the Maastricht Collection of Pierre Rieu.
These vehicles will accommodate the collection of the Liberation Museum in a temporary exhibition, providing depth, glory and content: (re)living the liberation message!
The Liberation Museum’s central theme is not the question what caused WW2, but how The Netherlands and Europe lost their freedom and how this subsequently was regained. The unique selling point of the museum is the Liberation. Allied politicians, their populations, troops and military material were instrumental to this liberation.
The temporary exhibition ‘The Rieu Collection. Glory to the Liberation Message’ especially shows the latter and seemlessly joins the museum’s permanent exhibition. Bringing the past back to life with diorama’s, typical ‘40’s smells, music, original films and speeches. Now for the first time, one can experience among others a Humber Snipe, a DUKw and a GMC Cargo.

Liberation Museum Groesbeek
The Liberation Museum was founded as a token of gratitude to the men from overseas who participated in the massive Allied Operations which took place in this area. The museum tells the story of Holland's struggle for freedom starting in 1918, but mainly focuses on the 1940-45 period of German occupation and the liberation by the Allies. There are scale models, dioramas, and various displays to give insight into what happened here. First, the arrival of the Americans led by General James Gavin, the youngest Divisional Commander in 'Market Garden'; then, their departure to fight the Battle of the Bulge (mid-November 1944), leaving 1,800 dead men behind. The soldiers were replaced by British, Canadian, as well as some Polish and Dutch troops, with many casualties as well. One of the museum's purposes is to emphasize the successful military actions of the American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, the American 9th Troop Carrier Command, and of the 30th British Army Corps during 'Operation Market Garden'.

USA Memorial Day 2011

It is Memorial Day Weekend here in the US and I thought the fans that don't know about Margraten would find this interesting to read about. The pictures here were taken by (and of) Suzy in Margraten today. It's her "Adopted" Gravesite that her parents adopted after the war and now that her parents have passed, she now carries on the tradition. The link will tell you all about it. Margraten is just a few miles from Maastricht. http://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries/cemeteries/ne.php
The Inscription on The Cross Reads:
HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY
A COMRADE IN ARMS
KNOWN BUT TO GOD

André Rieu Ambassador of Limburg Symphony Orchestra

André Rieu Has Become Ambassador
Of The Limburg Symphony Orchestra

André Rieu has become ambassador of The Limburg Symphony Orchestra*. The world star, violinist and Limburger in heart and soul, spoke out yesterday about the preservation of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and the Limburg culture.
He said amongst others, "It is an absurd plan to be economizing on culture. To economize on culture means you are reducing the economy of the land. You keep your hands off the Limburg Symphony Orchestra! It has been around for a very long time ... my dad conducted there his entire life, and you will stay away from it! We will start anew!"
André Rieu Sr. was appointed as conductor of the then Maastricht Symphony Orchestra in 1949, and led the orchestra for at least 31 years. André Rieu himself played in the Limburg Symphony Orchestra as violinist until 1989.
The Limburg Symphony Orchestra of Maastricht has launched a major action to ensure that the orchestra will remain. Due to the economizing plans of the government, the end of the orchestra in the capital of Limburg is being threatened. This action also entails prominent Limburgers making video statements against the proposed cuts. These images are then distributed on Internet sites, such as Facebook and YouTube.
On June 21 the LSO will present it's petition to the House. And on that day the orchestra will also be giving a concert.
*The Limburg Symphony Orchestra is a Dutch orchestra based in Maastricht in the province of Limburg, The Netherlands. It is one of the Netherlands’ oldest professional symphony orchestras. The Limburg Symphony Orchestra gives more than one hundred performances a season and occupies a significant place within Limburg’s cultural life. In addition to its symphonic offerings, the orchestra provides Opera Zuid with accompaniment, works with various choirs and runs extensive education programs.

Interview With Mirusia Louwerse, Margriet Magazine

Margriet Weekly Magazine of May 17, 2011

The Australian-Dutch soprano Mirusia Louwerse (26), touring with André Rieu for the past three years, is crazy about dresses from the 50's.
"I am a real girl's girl. I like to be pretty. As a young girl, Barbie was my huge role model. I always wore pink and skirts, even while horseback riding.
When I, at the age of 14 started to perform as a professional singer, my interests for fashion became part of the job.
"I Always Wore Pink and Skirts, Even While Horseback Riding"
During the touring around the world with André Rieu, I prefer to go shopping in my free time. I cannot wait until we go to England, where I can indulge myself in the Topshop. Clothing has to primarily suit you, the brand name does not matter. My taste has evolved more and more this past year by listening closely to the stylists, and also by experimenting with styles and colors.
I have an old fashioned hourglass figure: short, fitted dresses accented with high heels look the best on me. My clothing must be stylish and look feminine, and if I wear jeans, it'll be with a nice top. And never jeans with tears, that I find to be unsightly!
The 50's styles I find to be very inspiring, then women had, just like me, small waists, round hips and big breasts and they all looked so very feminine. That's why the series "Mad Men" really appeals to me, just like Sex and the City. Carrie and Samantha are still my role models. Actually I am just a slightly heavier version of Carrie".
On June 13, Mirusia will perform with Andre Rieu in the Amsterdam ArenA. This coming fall she'll perform a series of solo concerts. More information:  www.mirusia.nl

André Rieu Column Chapeau Magazine

Waltzing with Anthony Hopkins
André Rieu June/July Column for Limburg Chapeau Magazine
Music brings people from all over the world together. I say this very often during my performances, but sometimes it surprises me as to how this happens. You do not really think about it, but then it seems that a film greatness like Anthony Hopkins, whom I always found to be one of the best actors, happens to be a fan of my music. Something you normally do not hear. And did I know he was not only an actor, but also had long been involved in music. During the sixties he studied at the Academy of Music and Theater and was a musician/pianist. But he did not earn enough with that, so he tried earning a living as an actor. Well, you all know what became of that. About fifty years ago, he composed several music pieces which he just now placed in a row and put together as a waltz.
It appeared to be his great desire that this waltz was to be performed by me first, together with my Johann Strauss Orchestra. That request came to me via our New York office. A surprising request, naturally. First he sent us the notes and together with Frank Steijns, I made a complete orchestral arrangement from them. We sent him a tape and he reacted so enthusiastically that he immediately wanted to come to Maastricht. On a Sunday afternoon in April he visited our home, which in itself is a very special occasion. We had him and his wife take seats in the middle of our living room so that they could listen to the sound of the speakers coming from all sides when the tape started. "I'm in tears," he said.
When you have someone like him in your home it truly moves you. For him and his wife this was a very special moment and that you then share. It immediately creates a warm relationship. The next day he came to the studio to listen to how his waltz would sound live with the orchestra. I thought he would be there for about half hour or so but no, he remained there for the entire rehearsal from 9am to 2pm. He was totally absorbed by it.
"And The Waltz Goes On" is the title of the piece, which will also be the title for our new CD which will be released in the Fall. There will also be a new original composition which I've composed together with Frank Steijns. But the "World Premiere" of Anthony Hopkins’ waltz will be performed in July on the Vrijthof in Maastricht when we play it for the first time for the public. He is so interested that he and his wife will come to the concert, especially for the first evening and then perhaps again later. They have already confirmed their trip to Maastricht and already feel totally at home here. So again, it will be something very special on the Vrijthof, for which I am already greatly looking forward to. For the first time we will have two Gospel Choirs perform simultaneously, the Harlem Gospel Choir and the Soweto Gospel Choir.
Even though I said I'm going to take it a little easier, at least in my concepts, we still have our hands full. Our first major tour through Ireland and England is behind us and went fantastic. Sold out concerts everywhere, and the culminating point was the concert in the O2 in London for 16,000 people. The English have such a sense of humor. Each joke was a hit. We played our normal repertoire, except towards the end when we played "Home Sweet Home" and "We'll meet again". Also in Birmingham as well as other cities the atmosphere was great. The Irish in Dublin and Belfast put the frosting on the cake. This tour will definitely have a follow up.
Just barely back from England we departed for Australia, which is always quite a trip, but the public there is always very grateful. Especially for this tour "The Seekers" were reunited again after many years. After our return, we will record a new special in Vienna for ZDF, which will be broadcast on the 1st of October and is no less than two and half hours long. Pentecost weekend we will perform three concerts in the Amsterdam ArenA. Meanwhile we are busy preparing for our first tour to Brazil and for the first time we have Prague and Budapest included in our travel schedule. The interest keeps growing.
On Easter Monday the TROS aired our special of the flower island of Mainau, which produced 1.9 million viewers. We will also produce a special of the Vrijthof concerts for the TROS with lots of images of the city of Maastricht.
And afterwards, I will then finally take a vacation of a week or three. I solemnly promised that at home. Then I can enjoy a "Rieuke", since I have agreed to have my image displayed on a special glass of the "Brand" beer brewery. The proceeds of these glasses will go entirely for the renovation of the Museum at the Vrijthof. They should be available this summer. Cheers!! ... André Rieu

Jann's André Rieu Concert in Melbourne

Jann's Concert in Melbourne Last Night

This evening's concert was a fun night with several pleasant surprises and there were many happy familiar faces in the audience and André was in good spirits. André show-cased three of the JSO with solo performances - Tonja, Leon and Manoe, Tonja's performance of "The Swan" was moving and Mirusia received a standing ovation for her rendition of "Time to Say Goodbye" - naturally we were treated to "Aussie Aussie Aussie - Oy Oy Oy", and André beat Mirusia to it !!!
Alas, the random snowflakes escaping gave away what was to happen and it was right above our heads and when it dumped, it dumped big time, much of this was scooped up and shared with our friends sitting in the front row ... it's good to share LOL.
Another surprise was the break in routine of heading down the front when they played the Radetsky March and releasing the balloons. Everything erupted just prior to the Seekers performance who treated us to four of their songs - "Georgie Girl", "The Carnival is Over", "There Will Never be Another You" and "We are Australian". It was a magical performance with everyone in the Arena singing along and huge smiles on everyone's faces on stage and off.
André spoiled us with the Encore's tonight and the camaraderie in front of stage was the best I've experienced outside of Maastricht. Many photo's were taken and no doubt they will be all sent along to Sue as everyone gets home to their computers ... I am so pleased we went tonight - we really enjoyed the concert !!!! ... Jann :)
Thanks to Margaret (MS) for the Singing Mosh Pit Photos!

André Rieu Wins Album of The Year at Classic Brits

Violinist Andre Rieu - who has transformed once unfashionable waltz music into a stadium draw - was awarded the prized album of the year title at the Classic Brits.

André Rieu has won the Classic FM Album of the Year Award at the Classic BRITs 2011. He collected the award from Classic FM presenter John Suchet. André and his Johann Strauss Orchestra were awarded the accolade for Moonlight Serenade, which topped the classical charts in the UK for much of last year.

Seventh André Rieu Concert in Maastricht Possible

Vrijthof Six Days Confirmed, Seventh Concert Still Possible

MAASTRICHT by Stefan Gybels: André Rieu will again change his Vrijthof Concerts to the MECC this year if severe inclement weather prevails. Just like last year, the Vrijthof will be copied in the congress center.
On 11 July 2010 Rieu used the hall for the first time. The cause for the move was not because of stormy weather or rain, but was due to the world soccer game between the Netherlands and Spain. Since the match was broadcast live on the large screens around the Vrijthof, Rieu initially changed the concert to the afternoon. But due to the enormous heat that day, the back-up plan to use the MECC was implemented at the last moment.
The walls of the congress center were changed with enormous wall pieces depicting the buildings around the Vrijthof. Rieu evaluated his concert in the congress center and was satisfied with the construction results. Consequently the mini Vrijthof will again appear in the congress hall this year.
Kerstin Cornelis, spokesperson for Rieu, emphasized that changing to the MECC will only take place in case of continued inclement weather. "We will not move for just a single shower. Only when it is really stormy, will we go inside."
The orchestra leader will perform six times on the Vrijthof. On 15, 16, 17 and 22, 23 and 24 July. The Vrijthof will be changed over into a Concert Square for Rieu. The possibility for a seventh concert does exist, according to Cornelis, however there are currently still tickets available for the six confirmed concert dates. Rieu started in 2005 with his Vrijthof concerts. Back then there were only four, but that appeared not to be enough to satisfy all the fans. Last year the counter stopped with eight concerts.

Review: Andre Rieu and the Seekers at Rod Laver Arena

HE will never be cool but André Rieu has a knack for giving his fans what they want to hear. And last night, at Rod Laver Arena, thousands of them got an earful of what the Dutch maestro calls "beautiful music" - waltzes to swoon over, marches to clap to and sparkling operetta aimed squarely at the heart.
Rieu had them on side from the moment he strode down the centre aisle to 76 Trombones, his image magnified on giant video screens and the Johann Strauss orchestra following in his wake.
"We are in the most joyful city in Australia," he declared. But the chocolate box images looming behind Rieu’s company of singers and musicians spoke of Europe, a world of old fashioned charm where the soundtrack almost demands thrilling trills.
Rieu is a genial ringmaster, sending fake snowflakes falling on the shoulders of his audience when he is not sawing away at his Stradivarius.
And if the happy snaps of grandchildren get a bit cheesy, he brings the show back into line so every number zings with energy.
Highlights included the Snow Waltz, Time to Say Goodbye and You Are My Heart's Delight. And inviting the Seekers to join him on stage is an inspired move. They ground this Euro-fantasia in solid Australian songs, punching out rousing versions of The Carnival is Over and Georgy Girl.
Rieu laid strings lightly on these classics and worked wonders with Bruce Woodley’s I Am Australia. The music soared, the crowd roared and Rieu knew he’d done it again. He’d generated joy ... Andre Rieu will play a second show tonight.

André Rieu and Seekers Rod Laver Melbourne

How André Rieu Sought Out The Seekers

THE carnival is not over yet ... Not while Andre Rieu has The Seekers on board his latest tour as special guest artists.
Melbourne Herald Sun May 11, 2011 Last night, at Rod Laver Arena, Australia's fab four of folk joined the Dutch maestro and his orchestra for soaring, singalong versions of monster hits such as Georgy Girl and I'll Never Find Another You.
"It's a great compliment that André stands with us, as if we're serenading him," Judith Durham said. Athol Guy agreed Rieu's on-stage energy was "just electric. Andre is very outgoing and very entertaining".
Rieu, the King of Waltz, forged a connection with The Seekers after hearing Bruce Woodley's song, I Am Australian. Impressed, he tracked the quartet down and invited them to re-form for his Celebration of Music Tour. Keith Potger recalled: "It was very much, 'How do we do this?' Not, 'Should we do this'." "The makeup of his audience is very similar to ours," Woodley said.
"And after doing a few shows now, it's obvious that it all knits together very well."
Before the tour, The Seekers flew to Holland to rehearse with Rieu and were impressed with the maestro's command of every last detail.

André Rieu at Vector Arena New Zealand

André Rieu at Vector Arena New Zealand
From the moment André Rieu appeared on the huge video screens triumphantly leading his orchestra down centre aisle to the sound of 76 Trombones it was clear that we should wave bye-bye to the dignified reserve that is usually associated with classical music.
Standing centre-stage with his Stradivarius tucked under his chin, Rieu led the orchestra with dramatic flourishes as they joyfully performed the Johann Strauss waltzes that helped to make Vienna the centre of European culture in the glory days of the Habsburg Empire.
The swirling waltzes were punctuated by three fine tenors and a succession of delightful sopranos delivering some of Franz Lehar's best loved operatic moments.
By the time we reached Strauss's Blue Danube the front of stage was clogged with waltzing couples exhibiting huge gusto but varying degrees of expertise.
In an artfully managed tease, Rieu had the orchestra breaking out the champagne and preparing to leave the stage before bringing out his special guests - the Seekers, who have re-formed at his personal request after an absence of seven years.
Judith Durham looked frail - but her eyes were sparkling with girlish enthusiasm and her huge, crystal clear voice has lost none of its power.
As she sang The Carnival is Over the last remnant of audience reticence was thrown to the wind and a well-mannered mosh pit formed in front of the stage.
The orchestral accompaniment beautifully complemented Durham's voice and a few brief moments of a cappella gave a taste of the golden harmonies that took the Seekers to the top of the charts at the height of the swinging 60s.
After a soaring sing-along version of Georgy Girl the stadium erupted into a genteel frenzy and Rieu was left growling - "Not tired? Nothing to do tomorrow?" A resounding "No!" ushered in a further seven encores including a moving version of Amazing Grace played on a bagpipe and a tin whistle.

Old Photo Where André Grew Up ...

As many of you know, we've been making a Collage of André fans from all over the world with our "old" Baby pictures. One of the lady's sent in her picture for the Collage and it was taken in Maastricht (where she lives) and the white house in the background is the house that André grew up in. I had to crop the house out of it for the Collage, so thought it would be fun to post the full photo on here so everyone could see it.
