Instruments for André Rieu Being Renovated

André Rieu and the Johoann Strauss Orchestra by Al Girard
Instruments for André Rieu Being Renovated

February 23, 2011: The Pongauer instrument maker Lechner contributes his part to the good sound in André Rieu's orchestra. He cleans the brass instruments for the musicians.
Overhauling Six Instruments
Martin Lechner and his team received six brass instruments from the Dutch orchestra André Rieu for general overhaul. Lechner had sold them several years ago to the musician from the Netherlands.
Now, just before the concert in Salzburg, the brass instruments will be thoroughly cleaned, says Martin Lechner, "they consist of two C-and a B-flat trumpet, a tenor trombone, as well as a jazz and bass trombone"
Cleaning is Done Exclusively by Hand
Approximately once a year an instrument of a professional orchestra musician is professionally cleaned, says his son Christian Lechner ... exclusively by hand.
"To ensure the accuracy of the valves, we are talking about tenth and sometimes a hundredths of a millimeter," says Christian. "That is why it is so very important that we do this by hand. In cases like this, a machine can not do the work so precisely. It also takes experience, say a year or two as an apprentice, before you are really efficient."
Five Hours To Clean a Trumpet
"It takes three to five hours to completely clean a tumpett. So, for example, the green oxidation that looks like the patina of a church tower, is carefully chipped away" says Martin Lechner, "We of course carry copper sheeting and everything we need. But our basic material is indeed copper."
The instruments will be returned to the musician Wednesday afternoon, just prior to the sound check.

André Rieu Soloist Mirusia's Life as An Endless Fairytale

My Life is Like an Endless Fairytale
How Princess Mirusia Was Attracted to Her Friend Sebastiaan

Weekend Magazine: She definitely did not believe it was André Rieu who called her, but that single telephone call changed the life of Australian Mirusia Louwerse from one moment to the next. That is to say that two days later she was in the Netherlands for an audition, and since then has been performing as soprano next to the Maastricht violinist for the last four years. And not too insignificantly: it brought her the love of her life, sound technician Sebastiaan.
"Oh yeah, sure"’ was Mirusia Louwerse’s reaction when the phone in the Australian city of Brisbane rang and André Rieu introduced himself on the other end of the line. "Yes, really" said André. "Because, I received an e-mail." At that moment a light went on for the now 25 year old soprano. "That had to be the doings of my Aunt Els from Ulvenhout."
Mirusia was born in Australia in 1985. Her Dutch parents had immigrated there five years earlier. Her father, hailing from Zeeland (Province in the Southwest of the Netherlands) and an avid water sports individual became a ship designer and builder in Brisbane. Together with his wife, they realized quite soon that daughter Mirusia was crazy about singing. Even as a little girl she was already up on stage. "Once I was going to do a solo, but to the amazement of my parents I did not start. But instead waited for the choir, which was also on stage, until it had left. After all I was going to sing a solo!!!" From age fourteen she has been singing professionally. "First as a country singer and later on I changed more into the direction of jazz and classical music.
Afterwards I went to the conservatorium because classical music is what I really wanted to do. But unfortunately there is not much of a market for that in Australia. I did however in 2006, as the youngest ever, win the prestigious Dame Sutherland Opera Award. All of my mother and father’s relatives live in the Netherlands, including Aunt Els. She once told me about the program "Una Voce Particolare" by Ernst Daniel Smid and entered my name. "Shall I also continue to look and see what I can do for you?" she suggested. That was fine with me. That’s how I knew when André said something about an e-mail that it had to be from her. I could not believe what I was hearing. Especially when André asked if I would like to come to the Netherlands right away. As it happens, he was looking for a good female singer. He and his wife Marjorie picked me up from the airport and we clicked right away. I immediately sensed that we were family, just as if I was one of their nieces. And I do call him "Uncle André" frequently.
In the meantime Mirusia has already been part of the Maastricht violinist’s orchestra for four year. "Life is like an endless fairytale. I travel all over the world. Soar like an angel through the air while I sing and I view everyone in the orchestra as my family." And that family feeling is real because over the years many couples have formed from within the orchestra. Mirusia too has found the love of her life, thanks to André. "That happened during the recordings of a road soap of André in and around "de Efteling." I was walking around there like a princess. André always has the same people working for him when they recorded that particular soap. Sebastiaan was one of them. He found this "princess" to be quite interesting and she him too. But unlike many other couples within the orchestra, we have no plans for children or a wedding. Definitely not. I am only 25. I still have many years left for that.
TRIBUTE
A couple of years ago, Mirusia together with André, produced a CD specifically for the Australian market, titled "Waltzing Matilda," which consists entirely of Australian melodies and children’s songs. Waltzing Matilda is an Australian folk song, and is sometimes even called the "unofficial" Australian anthem. I also received a lot of requests for the "Ave Maria" by Schubert, which people would really like to see on a CD. I asked André if we could make just a single for that alone. He suggested however that we make an entire CD. And that became "Always and Forever", a story which in fourteen songs describes my life with André. With songs like "Feed the Birds" from Mary Poppins as a tribute to my huge idol, Julie Andrews. Memories from Cats and Solveig’s Song from Peer Gynt. I am so proud of it. The CD was first released in Australia and is now available here too in the Netherlands. Life has become quite exceptional the last few years. I realize that every time I walk through Maastricht. In certain places it is just like the "Efteling" but only bigger. But on the other hand, it can be rather small when you compare it to Australia."
BACK TO AUSTRALIA
Mirusia found a beautiful apartment in Maastricht. It is an older house from around 1700 with lots of beams and windows. And with pebbles on the sidewalk. I am enjoying myself here to the fullest. Except for when the weather is gray and somber for a long time. I cannot get used to that. That is winter here, so they tell me. Yes, that is something we do not know in Australia. There the weather is always nice. Although she likes it here in Maastricht, this coming year she is going to be living again in Australia. Definitely as long as her parents are still alive. Because I miss them so very much. The three of us always went somewhere together and now I only see them once a year. Either they come here, or I go that direction. I suffer badly from homesickness and they do not want to come and live in the Netherlands. It means that I will see Sebastiaan much less. Fortunately, he's usually there when we go on tour.

André Rieu Shocked by Earthquake in Christchurch

André Rieu Shocked by Earthquake in Christchurch NZ

MAASTRICHT, Netherlands, February 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- André Rieu reacted with horror this morning to the news about the earthquake in Christchurch. The Dutch violinist and conductor is currently rehearsing at his studio in Maastricht, for his upcoming tour of South Africa.
"I was really shocked when I heard the news and saw the first images on television. What terrible destruction. And the number of victims. It's really awful. The thoughts of my whole family, and the entire orchestra, are with the victims and the survivors. Everyone hopes never to have to go through something like this"
A tour has been scheduled for Australia and New Zealand in May. This includes a concert in Christchurch. However, André says it is much too early to decide whether the concert there can go ahead as planned.
"That's not something I'm thinking about right now. That's something for a later stage. The most important thing is caring for the victims and the clearing of the enormous devastation. Whether or not concerts can go ahead is not important right now. My thoughts go out to the inhabitants of Christchurch" André Rieu says.

Interview With André and Pierre Rieu

Interview With André and Pierre Rieu
We keep each other focused ... by Marieke van der Heijden

The resemblance is stunning. The same flamboyant personalities, boundless energy and an eye for fun. Pierre Rieu (28), resembles his father André (61) in every aspect. Even his passion for classical music is shared with the Waltz king. In the Docu Soap "The World of André Rieu" they allow us a glimpse behind the scenes.
"Can we lower the lights a little? Thank you. And can the piano play a little less prominent? Yes, precisely so. Nice!!" Even though yesterday’s show came off without a hitch, there is again a sound check today in the Mexican Auditorium.
Pierre: "My father is without a doubt, a perfectionist. Everything is adjusted pleasantly until it is exactly as it should be. We have two hours before the doors are opened to the public. There is not a bit of stress on anyone."
Pierre: "We are now going have a bite to eat, after which my father will lay down for a thirty minute nap, and then it starts." Once back stage, the smell of the food aromas is nothing to sneeze at. We brought our own catering. That might sound a bit decadent, but everywhere we went, they served us schnitzel. Well meant, but obviously that gets to be boring, and that is not the only thing the orchestra is presented." Private jets, limousines and ultra luxurious hotels. As a true leader and family man, André takes care of his traveling entourage, which consists of at least 120 persons. Under the guise of, he who demands the best from his people must also give the best. That caring consideration leads to a strong and familiar unit."
Pierre: "It sounds cheesy, but the "us" feeling is enormous. If the sound crew has a problem, the rest will not turn their backs. We solve that problem together. It cannot be any other way. The next day we have to put on a show again."
A MANDATORY TIME TO SIT STILL
The Rieu family has a clear mission. To conquer the world in a sensitive manner. And that, until recently, was never fast enough for these gentlemen.
Pierre: "We performed 120 concerts in a year on a tight schedule, six concerts in a row, one day off, then again five more concerts and then home for two weeks." Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Germany and even Africa, they waltzed each of them into the ground one by one. Until the "craziest violinist in the world", as he sometimes jokingly refers to himself, was forced to take a step back last year. The eternal optimist appeared to have contracted a virus of his equilibrium. Two months of complete rest was the result. All concerts, including two totally sold out performances in the Ahoy, had to be cancelled.
André: "I could not go on stage any more. Horrible!! Normally I am always busy doing something. Being idle is nothing for me. Sightseeing while on tour? I would rather be studying in my room. Vacation? No time. And having a cold? I take an ibuprofen and off we go. But now I just could not do anything anymore. Even if I stood up for a moment, I would become quite dizzy. For weeks on end, I was flat on my back."
"STALKING" OPA
The rest period was full of blood, sweat and tears, our debts were running high into the millions, and also reconsideration.
Pierre: "It was nerve wracking. My father’s condition changed continuously. After a relatively good day, the next day could be totally amiss. It was waiting, waiting and lots of talking"
André: "Everyone kept repeating the same thing, first recover and then we’ll see how to continue. That was fantastic. In a certain way it brought us even closer together as a family."
Pierre: Since last year, the proud father of daughters Linde and Lieke. “As soon as he could stand a little on his own feet again, he would come over to just play with the twins. At home we called him “the stalker” because not one day would go by without a visit by Opa. Secretly we thought that was very nice, knowing that later he would be gone away again a lot from home. It’s unbelievable. The innocence ...”
MEXICO
Super Opa or not, four months later the “Flying Dutchman” was again waltzing through the streets of Mexico. And is closely being followed by a camera crew which will record his life on and around the stage for this Docusoap without a script because there is always something going on according to Pierre. Those are not only just words. When André visited the National Museum of Anthropology early that afternoon, where because of unknown reasons from the local police, filming was not allowed, he is immediately attacked by a horde of screaming female fans. André’s flowing Dutch hair is being surrounded by Mexican temperament, a nice sight. And yet, if it had to be done, he would have given up everything.
André: "I felt myself slowly getting better again and then it started itching."
Pierre: "We did not go full steam ahead. Fundamentally it had to be different. Together we had to ensure that we could do what we wanted to do. The entire system had to be revamped."
André: "Previously I wanted to know everything and would always say “Yes” to everything. Consciously we put the brakes to that. I delegate more. This will never happen again. You can put that in stone!”
Pierre: "I only bother him with very important things. The rest is mine. This way he can focus on what is really important, to put on a fantastic show."
André: "For the first time in five years I’ll be going on vacation again. Hopefully with my entire brood. I am looking forward to that. Really, I have never felt better. Even on stage I feel better.”
GOOD MARRIAGE
Pierre: “The first time I went on tour was when I was nineteen. I found everything fascinating and thrilling! But in the beginning it was a matter of getting accustomed to it. As technical production manager, I had fifty people working for me and I was responsible for the entire life of the show. I can still remember the first time very vividly: just prior to the sound check my father naming me the things that were not done properly in a bossy tone. That went on for three consecutive weeks. That’s when I made it clear to him with trembling knees that things really needed to be different. At home we communicated so well together. He immediately acknowledged that he was wrong. Since that time we’ve never had words again. Some people find that to be implausible and believe that in a good marriage there has to be discord. And there again, I have never had a fight with my wife. When you can communicate well with each other, that is not necessary."
André: "We are not really the only ones. I once spoke with a psychologist and she said, “You can count your blessings. And so it is.” Of course we have differences of opinions, but that does not mean that we start throwing things."
THE END?
The applause still rumbles on long after André has left the stage after a three hour long concert. The face of the Maestro is adorned with a huge smile. Pierre, who spent the majority of the evening in the hall “to soak in the ambiance”, enters shortly thereafter. The same smile of blissful satisfaction. Again a memorable evening and definitely not to be the last one. But again, everything has an end.
André: “Who, me retire? My wife Marjorie and I speak about that every day, but I can’t see myself standing between the elderly for a long time to come. Seth Gaaikema still performs three times a week, and he is 71!”
Pierre: “As long as we can ensure quality, we will continue.”
André: “We can keep each other focused on that, and I will be the first one to admit that it has been fun.”
Pierre: “For me there will always be enough things to continue on with. André Rieu is a strong trademark, which will continue to exist. My task is to manage it and prevent the wrong people from milking it.”
André: “I do not like to think about it too much. There are many countries waiting for us. Let me just conduct another "boring" concert. No matter how much I miss my family. And no, you‘ll never get used to that. It makes you stronger? No, it only gets worse. Luckily I now have a web cam on my lap top with which I can watch my grandchildren 24 hours a day. A present from Pierre. As soon as I am on the road again, I think: "This is fantastic. The stage, the energy: this is what we do; this is what we live for!!”

Will André Rieu Lose His Blond Goddess Mirusia?

Will André Rieu Lose His Blond Goddess?
The Telegraaf by Wilma Nanninga

AMSTERDAM: Because of the 61 year old André Rieu, Mirusia Louwerse lives in a fairy tale. Four years ago, her aunt wrote a letter to the violin virtuoso to draw his attention to her niece living in Australia. The blonde singer was welcomed with open arms. She emigrated to Limburg. But the almost 26-year-old soprano is now returning since she suffers from homesickness.
Will The Violinist Miss His Goddess?
"In May I will return to the country of my birth. My parents are Dutch, but like to remain in Australia. I've really missed them in recent years. I do not know how much longer they will still be around, maybe in five years they might be ill or deceased. They are the only ones I have, I have no brothers nor sisters."
It was not an easy decision because Mirusia's sweetheart still lives in the Netherlands. Shyly she says: "Australia sounds so far away, but in 24 hours you can be there. I do not find a trip like that to be a problem. Sebastian will come to Australia as often as possible. He's already been there eight times with me. Here we do not always see each other either, he lives in Amsterdam, I in Maastricht. Through his work as a freelance sound engineer, he often tours with André. And that is how we got to know each other. The first time I saw him was only from behind. I thought 'what lovely blonde hair! "And when he turned around, I saw that he also has a very sweet face. Blushingly I said, 'hi' and felt as if I was fifteen again!"
Mirusia is not afraid that when she returns to Australia, he will be looking for another girl friend. "He understands my life style and accepts it. That is so special of him".
Note: Although this article appears to indicate that Mirusia is leaving André, this is definitely not what we have heard from reliable sources. Mirusia will continue to tour with André, but will be commuting back and forth from Australia ... we are waiting for more information and will post it as soon as we receive it.

Interview With André Rieu Soloist Mirusia Louwerse

An Interview With Mirusia February 2011

When you perform with André Rieu, you always wear these Sissi (Austrian Empress) like dresses. When away from the stage, are you still very involved in how you look?
►Yes. I very much like fashion. I have a lot of dresses. From Australian designers, but also from Addy van den Krommenacker. I am not a diva in the sense that I cry, I only want a room which has Evian water. I was born in Australia and I am really easy going ... but I just like to be pretty. You will never see me without make-up. Even if it is just to go to the mailbox. I just think it is fun to make myself beautiful. Even when I go to Albert Heijn (Supermarket chain), I put on something nice.
Did you as a child make yourself up with lush hairdo's and put on doll's dresses?
►Yes! Really. I was always a little princess. I enjoyed "dressing up". I am really a girl's girl with hair and dresses, a real someone for the stage. When I was seven years old, I was asked to sing a Christmas song with a choir. It was to be a solo recording. No matter how often the recording was started, I refused to sing. And then mu Mom came to me and asked: "What is the matter, Mirusia? Why don't you sing?" and I said: "I will not sing as long as they (the choir) are here behind me, this is my solo". Only when they left did I start to sing. I have always been a diva.
Is it not difficult to play "second fiddle" with someone like André Rieu? Doesn't he poke his nose into everything?
►Oh yes, into the smallest details. When we are picking out dresses, he'll say: "That I like, that I don't" When we do our make-up he'll say:"That is nice and that isn't, when we go somewhere, what the stage looks like, what sort of background ... All those things are being sorted out by him. He does everything. But since he has been ill, it is a lot less, but that has never been an issue between us." He is more like an uncle to me. Sometimes I even call him "Uncle André".
Does "Uncle André" pay fairly well? For example, can you, wherever you perform, go to the local Pieter Corneliszoon Hooftstraat (Amsterdam's most luxurious and exclusive fashion designer's street) to go shopping?
►Hahaha, of course. Yes I am a singer and I sing all over the world. So yes, I am paid very well. I do frequently shop in the P.C. Hooftstreet. Some of the people there know me already, ha ha.
Do you as a soloist have more privileges than the others? For instance, do you travel with André in his private airplane while the others travel in a by him chartered airplane?
►Sometimes yes. But as a norm we always fly together. Most of the time André flies right along with us.
Do you like André sleep in a suite, or do you have a normal room?
►Just like everyone else, I sleep in a normal room. Most of the time the entire hotel is booked full by us. And when they do not have a suite, André sleeps in a regular room. He is just a very normal man.
Are you allowed to empty the mini bar to your heart's content?
►Only if I pay for it myself, ha ha. Every evening we have an after concert party, so the mini bar is not necessary.
Can some people be malicious because you sing with André Rieu?
►Yes, this past week I received an e-mail with the following: ["You are an opera singer. Conduct yourself as one. And do not perform every evening with that idiot on stage."] ... But I like it that with André you are not there to just sit there and listen to the music, but to have fun. Every evening, people are dancing in the aisles. By the end of the concert, everyone is jumping up and down and doing the conga line. And all that to the tune of "Adieu, mein kleiner Gardeoffizier". (So long, my little Captain of my Heart) André is a huge example for someone like me who also likes to bring classical music to the masses. I find it absurd that during a classical concert you are only allowed to watch and not applaud. When the music makes you happy and you would like to clap or sing along, why is that not allowed? Every evening when I start to sing "Don't cry for me Argentina" I receive a standing ovation and I can hear the entire audience singing along. Singing is just lovely and I do it all day long.
Also in the shower? ►Yes, of course, especially in the shower. That is the place. There you have, along with steam a beautiful echo.
And I take it you sing in front of the mirror? ►Yes, ha ha. Sometimes yes.
