André Rieu Live in Maastricht 2010 in Cinema's World Wide!

André Rieu Concert Maastricht 2010 Showing Live in 27 Countries

Classical superstar André Rieu, one of the world's most successful artists, is coming to cinemas all over Europe for an exclusive broadcast of the July 2010 installment of his renowned Live In Maastricht concert. Arts Alliance Media, Europe's leading alternative content provider, are bringing the event via satellite to cinemas in 27 countries.

The concert is being captured live, and will be delivered via satellite to cinemas in countries including the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Czech Republic, and Hungary for a special one-night-only performance on July 20th.

A musical phenomenon, André Rieu is unlike anything else in the entertainment world. Music fans can expect the experience of a lifetime when they witness the only classical concerts where the audience jump to their feet and dance in the aisles. The highest-charting classical instrumentalist of all time, having topped the Billboard Hot Tour rankings with his sold-out World Stadium Tour last year, André Rieu will now be bringing his spectacular production to cinemas across Europe.

Performed in front of thousands of fans in the open air in André Rieu's home town of Maastricht, the highly lavish concerts feature Rieu's famous 50-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra performing crowd-pleasing music against some of the most elaborate and expensive sets ever seen.

Now fans in 27 countries can see for themselves just why André Rieu is the biggest solo male touring artist in the world. Conducting the Johann Strauss Orchestra with his violin bow – just like the composer himself – Rieu's onstage charisma and rock-star demeanour make this cinema event simply irresistible, and now fans can experience the show themselves in pristine digital cinema quality.

Libelle Interview With André Rieu

Dutch Magazine 'Libelle' Interview With André Rieu
Libelle June 25, 2010
Interview by Monique van de Sande
Photos by Dirk-Jan van Dijk

Looking around André Rieu enjoys his office, a castle in Maastricht. This was the way he wanted it and now is the way it is. He started his career with the Limburg Symphonic Orchestra and now has success around the world with his own Orchestra.

Last October you turned 60, but nothing indicates that you are working less. Your agenda for this year is completely full. Is travelling your life?
"For the main part, yes. But I am not the victim of a manager who squeezes me out one year and throws me away the next, which happens often to artists. I wished to do this myself and I built it up together with my wife Marjorie. Of course we hate to be separated so often, you never get used to that. In the past, I remember lying in the garden and watching a plane fly over. I thought: "Maybe it is going to America". In my imagination I was on board already!".

Isn't that hunger satisfied after so many years?
"Oh no, I still love to see and get to know all those countries. In my case that of course includes the concerts. That drive never changes, I love to perform on stage. Addicted? No, for then you cannot do without it. I think I can do without it, well ... I am not totally sure … I have heard of runners who make in their body something called endorphin, which gives you a feeling of happiness. Maybe the same thing happens when you successfully perform on stage. I only know for sure that I gain a lot of energy from it. It is great to do what you like and what you are good at."

In July you are giving concerts in the Netherlands again. Do you experience the concerts in your own country as different?
"It is always nice to perform in my own country and I don't have to travel far. The Maastricht concerts are very special to us ... they are a home performance and I will enjoy that eight times this year."

How are the Dutch concert attendees compared to the audiences abroad?
"All the audiences are pretty much the same wherever we go. Music has no borders, that is the beautiful thing about music. What I like most about the Dutch fans, is that they also follow our road soaps. They really know everything about us, also behind the scenes."

You have a career of 30 years in music and you are married to your wife Marjorie even one year longer. What exactly is her role in your musical career?
"A major part, for sure. After the music academy, I was to become the eternal student. Then Marjorie said, "What do you think about the idea of finding a job and earning money?" Very wise, ha, ha. I started with the Limburg Symphonic Orchestra. I was not happy there and she knew that. I continued on there for 10 years ... you know how it goes ... We purchased a house, two children came. When I was ready to go out on my own, Marjorie backed me. In the beginning we lived on her income as a teacher. My orchestra (Maastricht Salon Orchestra) did not make much, but she thought it was more important that I could follow my heart."

In the meantime your situation has changed radically.
"In a lot of aspects, yes. But Marjorie still works very hard. Often I start the new tour in Germany and then she joins us to check the show with a notebook in her lap. At the end of the concert she tells me what can be improved. I am a terrible perfectionist myself, but Marjorie always knows how to make it even better. She also writes my texts for every new program. That works, because she knows me thoroughly. But above all she is my sounding board. Even if we walk the dogs together, we talk about work."

Being a musician, do you also feel like an entertainer?
"As soon as you're on stage you ARE an entertainer. Even if classical music is your repertoire. You may not say that, but it is true. People purchase a ticket because they want to be entertained. I do that with words and music. I have always admired Toon Hermans (a Dutch one man show comedian, who has passed away a few years ago). And I still do right now. His timing was sublime and he never told jokes to the prejudice of others. I don't do that either, although it seems to be a trend … I prefer to play with the audience … wait a little ... and then they laugh. That is nice. It is a pity that it is not appreciated by professionals. I have another example, Godfried Bomans who was in the eyes of critics no real writer! Because he was funny and he also earned money with it!

You've been followed by the same negative criticism for years.
"Indeed. Classical music appears to be something to experience with a serious face, preferably in a small audience. If you can put an entire hall upside down, that is of no importance. I use to think, Are those ten thousand people maybe all idiots?"

In the meantime nobody can ignore you. You even received two official decorations.
"That is right. In 2002 I was decorated as a Knight in the order of the Dutch Lion, and since 2008 I also received a French decoration: Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. Those recognitions mean something to me. I can tell a nice story about the last decoration. The year 2002 was on it. When I drew the French ambassador's attention to that, he said, "That is no mistake. It was in our drawer that long". Apparently a former employee hesitated to give it to André Rieu. But in the meantime I have impressive company: Harry Mulish and Hella Haase (Dutch writers) also have the same decoration. And they are real celebrities!"

Is there still something to conquer?
"I have a lot more plans. I prefer to make classical music accessible to a big audience. That is what I am going to do! I just started with the second symphony of Brahms. An arranged version where I left out the difficult parts. Of course that is forbidden by the critics, but if I offer the complete symphony all at once, I lose my audience. So I'll do it slowly. And what is wrong with that? I intend to become 120, so I still have enough time."

Did you ever have the feeling that you were not a good father?
"You mean because of my career? The first years certainly not. I was still working with the Limburg Symphonic Orchestra and during the day I had more time than most other fathers. If at the elementary school something creative had to be done, then I was part of it. I was between all those mothers, on these little chairs, making St. Nicholas hats … I am very happy that I was able to do that and nobody can take that away from me. But even when I travelled more, I stayed a very involved father. I had the good fortune that my youngest son Pierre, went with me right away, to watch and help as much as possible. That evolved more and more and now he is the Vice President of my Company. That does mean that he travels with me less and it fits better into his life right now, as a father of two young daughters. Without Pierre things are less exciting of course. When he is with me, I can hold his hand before I go onto the stage and that is nice because I am always so nervous. I am not away from home for months at a time, I regularly split a long tour up. I am lucky that Pierre and his wife Eefje live right around the corner and you can be sure that I see those two little girls as often as possible."

Your success is enormous. What does that do to you?
"Nothing, except that it gives me lots of energy, but it does not change me. Fame is nothing. What difference does it make that I appear on TV more than somebody else? But okay, the outside world does react to that. You have to be realistic in that. I have permanent protection. I could think, Screw you, I just want to be able to walk the streets freely, but that would be just stupid. If Pim Fortuijn (Dutch radical politician) would have had protection, he would still be alive."

Does your fame also have a positive side?
"Absolutely. The affection that I experience is very nice. I also hope, with my fame, to mean something for the world. The idea that we won't experience heaven until after our passing, I have given up a long time ago. You have to create your own heaven on earth. I at least do my best on a small scale. With Marjorie I plant trees in Burkina Faso, for the past 20 years, where the Sahara is trying to take over. By now it has turned into quite a forest. It is called: the forest of friendship. There is an education center where people are taught it is better not to cut the trees. I am also planning to perform on the North Pole next year to draw attention to the melting Pole caps. We should not get stuck in negative thoughts, together we can achieve a lot. I am convinced of that."
In the absence of John our Translator who is on vacation in Europe, we thank Ineke and Sonja for translating this.

André Rieu Fans in Australia Say Good Bye To The Seekers

André Rieu Fans Say Good Bye To The Seekers

ANDRÉ Rieu Fans may get to see the Seekers final farewell. The pensioner pin-up personally requested the band to regroup to open for his Australian tour in October.

Seeker's guitarist Keith Potger said Rieu lured the band out of six years of retirement. "We had decided to hang up our guitars, but this was such an attractive offer," Potger told music writer Cameron Adams. "Our audience is André Rieu's audience and vice versa, They synergy was hard to deny. It would have been different if Jet had asked us to be guest artists on their show. Although I love Jet, I have their music on my iPod. But this is an audience marriage made in heaven."

The Seekers will fly to Europe to rehearse with Rieu before the Australian tour, but Potger is unsure if the band will form again. "The answer is I don't know," he said.

In the meantime Potger will perform at the Lord Mayor's Command Performance at the Melbourne Town Hall on July 2. The even raises money for the Support Act, a charity that looks after musicians in the times of hardship, illness and distress.

Thanks to Rob for sending the newspaper clipping of this!

G20 Protests Force André Rieu to Cancel Concert in Toronto

TORONTO (BNO NEWS) — G20 protests have forced Dutch violinist André Rieu and his orchestra to cancel a planned concert in Toronto on Saturday, police said.

Rieu was scheduled to perform, along with his 55 piece Johann Strauss Orchestra, at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Saturday night, at a time when world leaders are meeting in the Canadian city.

But peaceful protests turned violent in some parts of downtown Toronto on Saturday, forcing additional street closures and other security measures. Some cars were set on fire while protesters smashed windows and turned against police officers.

“What a sad moment! We all where ready for a concert in Toronto,” Rieu wrote on his Twitter account. “The police closed all roads so nobody could come to the hall. We had to leave.”

Rieu said all tickets sold for Saturday’s concert will be valid during a new concert in December. “We come back in December. The date we let you know as soon as possible. I am very sad,” he added.

Constable Wendy Drummond of Toronto Police confirmed the concert had been cancelled because of protests.

Rieu is one of the best selling live acts in the world, outselling artists such as Britney Spears and Beyonce. He sold more than 800,000 tickets last year and has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.

Continuo Children's Chorus With André Rieu in Atlantic City

Continuo Arts Young Artists Deliver the Goods in Atlantic City

Performing to over 9000 Concert goers at Boardwalk Hall last Saturday night, the Continuo Arts Children’s Chorus & Singers brought the house down in their Michael Jackson tribute, performing "Earth Song" with André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra.

Dr. Candace Wicke is the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Continuo Arts Choral Programs, located in Summit and Westfield. When the invitation came to Candace Wicke to feature her choral students in the André Rieu 2010 Celebration Tour, Wicke had just one week to prepare the children for the concert. Within two days, all 28 children were on board, and excited about this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. With just a short rehearsal time, the children, ages 7-16, were ready for the big night with André Rieu.

On Saturday morning, the children, parents and chaperones boarded the bus, arriving in Atlantic City two and a half hours later. The entire experience was new to many of the younger children – the bus, the mammoth Boardwalk Hall, dressing rooms with security guards, and all-white costumes on hangers awaiting the dress rehearsal and performance.

First came the run-through with a charming orchestra representative, Thomas, who made the children feel at ease with the immense stage decorated in flowers and the overhead lights in the stadium-like auditorium. There was the first rehearsal, and then the dress rehearsal where everyone got to put on their "whites" and meet André Rieu and the Brazilian sensation, Carmen Monarcha , soloist for "Earth Song,." Mr. Rieu rode up and down the aisles on his Segway, listening and making suggestions to the children.

Following a catered dinner with the orchestra, additional rehearsal time with Wicke in the dressing room, and a last minute fitting of the white costumes, it was show time. The tension backstage was palpable as the children and chaperones awaited their cue. Finally, the chorus entered from both sides of the stage, and "Earth Song" was received so enthusiastically. The chorus did a splendid rendition of Michael Jackson hand and body motions as they sang. After a standing ovation, the chorus was ushered backstage for photos with André Rieu during the intermission. For the second half of the concert, students were escorted as a group to special seats, to the resounding applause of an appreciative audience. There were many special flourishes throughout the concert, such as waltzing in the aisles, and a balloon drop which delighted adults and children alike.

André Rieu Fans Urged To Waltz Into Toronto!

André Rieu Fans Urged To Waltz Into Toronto
For Concert Despite G20 Delays

TORONTO - June 23, Getting to a concert by the King of Waltz should be easy as one-two-three if people plan ahead, says a spokeswoman for the downtown Toronto venue.

André Rieu and his orchestra are performing Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre but its close proximity to the G20 security zone has some fans worried.

Police are advising people to avoid the downtown area during the weekend summit and motorists are warned to expect delays on routes in and around the city.

Rajani Kamath, spokeswoman for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, says concert-goers who leave themselves lots of time to get there should be able to waltz right in with little trouble. She says parking is usually available near the centre but with possible road closures in the area, people are encouraged to take public transit.

Both GO Transit and the Toronto Transit Commission are planning to provide service during the summit, although passengers are advised to leave early and bring water and snacks in case of delays. Subway stations, including Union Station just steps from the Air Canada Centre, will be open.

"What we are telling concert-goers for the André Rieu concert is to leave early, have lots of patience and just be prepared for delays in getting into the downtown core," Kamath says. She says the concert's promoter was told ahead of time that the G20 summit would be happening the weekend of the concert.

Rieu is currently on a North American tour and plays Montreal on Friday night. The Dutch born violinist and his orchestra are popular with audiences around the world for performing waltzes by composer Johann Strauss.

Many attractions are being closed for the weekend, including the CN Tower, Rogers Centre, the Art Gallery of Ontario and performances of the musicals "Rock of Ages" and "Mamma Mia!" A Blue Jays game has been moved out of town to Philadelphia. However, not all events are cancelled. Toronto's professional soccer team, Toronto FC, is playing the Los Angeles Galaxy at BMO Field on Saturday night, just west of the downtown area.

The Seekers To Join André Rieu in Australia Concerts

André Rieu Has The Seekers Join Him In Australia's Concerts

THEY have a combined age of 272, making them roughly the same vintage as a Bach masterpiece ... So it is apt that The Seekers are reforming to support classical music superstar André Rieu on his Australian tour later this year. Rieu set about organising the reunion after discovering the song "I am Australian" during his tour last year. He performed the song with radio broadcaster Alan Jones at his Sydney shows.

"This song was enough for me, when you can compose and sing this song, you must be marvellous," Rieu says. And so he Googled the Seekers and discovered the pop folk act had sold more than 50 million albums. "I always want to do something more than my normal concerts, so I thought why not book the Seekers," he said. "But I saw they're not anymore together - I was talking with a man who said, `If there's one man in the world who can bring them together, perhaps it's you'.

"I have built three castles in Australia, bringing back The Seekers together was the next challenge." Seekers singer Judith Durham said the call from Rieu to their management was something of a shock. "It was out of the blue," Durham said. "We weren't thinking about performing together again. We had our own projects.

"It's going to be really, really special and I think André is going to conduct the orchestra for us," she said.

Rieu has invited the band to rehearse with him in Europe and is yet to decide how many songs the group will perform - he thinks probably three or four, but will wait until he meets them. While time has marched on for The Seekers, Durham says AC/DC and the Rolling Stones prove you can put on a good show at any age. "The Rolling Stones are practically the same age and they performed full on for two hours," she said.

Below is a link to The Seekers singing, "I Am Australian" ~ the song that André is referring to ... The second link shows that the Seekers will be playing in ALL of the Australian Concerts. For those who aren't quite sure who they are, I guess Hey There "Georgy Girl" would be the one most would remember by title. Thank you to Mike, Rob and Margaret for all sending different articles and Newspaper clippings on this!

Some Hightlights of André Rieu's Atlantic City Concert

...

Mary Ann called me tonight from her hotel room in Atlantic City after the Concert and told me all about it. She said it was fantastic, (of course!) Here are a few 'highlights' that I thought were interesting and some that people have asked questions about.

The first thing she told me that I was so excited to hear is he has brought "Kimmy" with him on tour! For those of you who don't know, she is the South African Soprano that sang at his concerts there. (Ave Maria, The Lullaby and African Dream) Her solo song on this Tour is "Ave Maria". And of course she sings as the third soloist in the songs with Mirusia, Carmen and the Three Tenors ~ Gary, Bela and Thomas.

Mirusia sang one solo and Mary Ann couldn't remember what it was, so any of you that were there maybe you can fill that in for us. She did say that Mirusia has so much power in her voice, more then ever and it was just beautiful. (Update: Kay has told us it was "Memories" from Cats that Mirusia sang.) The Three Tenors had two songs, one of them being Sorrento. There is the Michael Jackson Tribute with André playing "Ben" and Carmen singing "Earth Song". (Carmen does not sing another solo.)

Tanja played her solo! And Manoe played Hava Nagila. Also for so many of you that like it, you'll be glad to know that André and the JSO do play Marina! They also play Adieu in the Encores and he ends the concert with Braham's Lullaby ...

It's not all of it, but it gives you some of the highlights ... the rest can be left to surprise for those of you going to the concerts in the following days .............. THANK YOU Mary Ann

And a reminder note: André's new CD/DVD "Forever Vienna" is for sale at the Concerts at the Merchandise Stand! (It won't be available in our stores until 6/29)

The TODAY Show With André Rieu, Alice and Fans!

André and JSO at The TODAY Show in New York City

I thought I would talk about my New York story from the moment we arrive in NY … wrong! We had a late night flight, taking off Vancouver at 11pm June, 14. Though quite sleepy, I still browsed through the in-flight entertainment. Wondering if there’s any André music … then right on the first page under classical, A (as in André) comes first, and what a nice surprise, there’s the orange CD cover of Forever Vienna, the UK version. Oh! Gotta take a picture of it and show the folks in the Harmony Parlor. Miss flight attendant might have found me a bit strange, as if I had never seen a video screen on the back of the seat. I had to take quite a few pics to get a better one. The meal was more delicious as I played Bolero with my headsets on.

André Rieu Announces 2011 Schoenbrunn Concert at Press Conference

André Rieu Announces Schoenbrunn Castle Concert for 2011

In the White and Gold Rooms of the Schoenbrunn Palace, the scheduled Press Conference for André Rieu's July 1, 2011 planned Concert took place. Rieu made the announcement of the 2011 Concert in front of Schoenbrunn.

André Rieu, the Dutch violinist and orchestra leader so far has sold more than 30 million albums. Together with his 50 member Johann Strauss Orchestra, he performs concert tours on five continents. Each year more than 700,000 spectators experience his great concerts - he is thus one of the top ten touring artists. In the U.S. he was crowned the No. 1 Classical Artist, and in Australia he received more than 100 times the platinum award for his CD's and DVD's. André Rieu, "Even as a child I was fascinated by the enormity of the world of music. My father was a conductor and I still remember the bombastic sound of the orchestra, the many violin bows who always went the same time in the same direction. I thought that was wonderful! However, I wondered about the somber atmosphere during those concerts. In all of them there were all these serious faces, no one was allowed to clear his throat, let alone laugh. And all that in spite the fact that so much joy was received through this music!"

"The waltz drew me so much under it's spell that really several years later it became a way in my life as a musician, living in three-quarter time. Today together with my own orchestra I play much more than just the waltz. My dream is to make all sorts of classical music accessible to a wide audience."

Thank you as always for the ©Translations John!!
